Why Google Rankings and AI-Search Visibility Can Differ
A Google ranking and an appearance in a selected AI answer describe different observations. Neither establishes how many customers a business gained or lost. Record the platform, prompt, date, and result before comparing them.
Search Results and Written Answers
A search result can list pages or businesses for a query. A written AI answer may name a business, describe a service, or refer to sources. Check what was actually displayed rather than assuming that a result in one format predicts another.
For example, finding a business’s website in a search result does not establish whether a separate conversational answer will name it.
Read the Answer in Context
Keep the exact question with the response. A request about a named business differs from a request for businesses offering a service in a particular location.
If a sampled answer does not name your business, that observation applies to that question and moment. It does not prove that every user received the same answer.
What to Record
-
Question and Location: Save the exact prompt, including the service and place it names.
-
Platform and Date: Record where and when the answer appeared.
-
Business Mentions and Sources: Keep the response and any referenced pages so the observation can be checked.
How to Check Public Information
Review the Relevant Question
Read the question alongside the answer. Distinguish a missing mention from an incorrect business name, phone number, address, or other public fact.
Check the Existing Page
Open the business’s relevant page and compare the displayed information with the current fact confirmed by its owner.
Check Any Referenced Source
If the answer refers to another page, examine that page separately. An answer and its cited source may not say the same thing.
Keep the Observation Dated
Save a screenshot or page with the URL and date. Public pages and search responses can change.
Confirm the Correction Scope
Before paid work, verify the problem, the business’s control of the page or listing, and the access path. LocalMention can quote one or two public facts, or an obvious publishing error, with the exact edits agreed in writing.
Use Each Result for What It Shows
A traditional ranking and an AI appearance count can be recorded separately. Neither should be used as proof that a public-information correction caused a business result.
Document an agreed correction with dated before-and-after or submission evidence. A third party’s publication decision and any later AI answer remain separate from that record.
